Memory Verses:
4 Show me Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths.
5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day.

Sitting at the Feet of the Lord, Listening to Learn, and Learning to Listen

It’s interesting to see the different ways people choose to rest and fill their time. Some join book clubs, while others find joy in bowling or pickleball leagues, or they commit to learning something new. The other day, I was with a friend at his restaurant and spoke with his father, who mentioned he had to leave for a class. Curious, I asked him what class he was taking, and he told me he was learning Chinese at OU and was enrolled for the fall semester. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing when I’m older, but I found it fascinating that in his free time, he chose to invest in something meaningful.
It got me thinking about how often we do not take advantage of our downtime, our time when things aren’t stressful. It seems we are reflective after things happen in our life, or even reactionary, instead of sitting in quiet time intentionally listening to the Lord. I have learned not only how difficult it is to listen to learn from the Lord and His direction, instead of telling the Lord what I think.
In the quiet moments of your life, are you seeking God’s direction or filling the space with your ideas?

Similarly, one life lesson we can learn from David is how he spent his private time—his time alone, away from the battles and the responsibilities of kingship. David meditated on and thought deeply about the Lord. This is a crucial aspect of our lives that, when left unchecked, can lead to confusion and a loss of direction regarding where God is leading us.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored many life lessons from David and the people around him, but this lesson may be one of the most profound. It speaks to David’s passion to do everything to honor the Lord. Today, we’ll look at the Davidic Covenant—a unique moment in Scripture when God makes an everlasting promise to David. It’s one of five major covenants in the Bible, each revealing a new layer of God’s plan for salvation.
The Noahic Covenant: God promises never to flood the earth again, a covenant of preservation.
The Abrahamic Covenant: Through Abraham, God promises to bless the entire world, creating a lineage from which the Savior would come.
The Mosaic Covenant: An agreement to preserve the Law as a guide for God’s people until the ultimate Savior arrives.
The Davidic Covenant: This covenant promised that through David’s lineage, a lasting throne would be established and a future Son would build a house for God, a foreshadowing of Christ.
The New Covenant: This final covenant, fulfilled in Jesus, unites all the previous covenants, bringing ultimate salvation through His life, death, and resurrection. It is the covenant that continues through the church and will be completed when Jesus returns.
David, now king over all of Judah, had finally united the kingdom. For the first time in over a decade, he found himself in a moment of peace, without battles or giants to face. What David does during this time, how he seeks God, and the covenant God makes with him during this quiet season of his life, provide a powerful example for us all.
