David: Life Lessons; Confidence in the MIdst of Crumbling
September 15, 2024 / Kingsview ChurchMemory Verses:
4 Show me Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths.
5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day.
Psalm 25:4-5 NKJV
How do we maintain confidence in God when everything around us is crumbling? We’ve all faced moments or seasons where it feels as if the world is against us, where circumstances outside of our control leave us feeling as if we can’t take another step.
Awaken the Hidden Reservoir
I recently read an interview with Sugar Ray Leonard, the former boxing champion and Olympic gold medalist. During the conversation, he shared an unexpected leadership principle: the “hidden reservoir.” When asked how he kept pushing forward when many thought he was past his prime, Sugar Ray explained that he tapped into this hidden reservoir. The interviewer, curious, asked, “What’s that?”
The hidden reservoir, Sugar Ray said, is a place deep within yourself that no one else knows about. It’s a place only you can access when you need to find the strength, grit, and resilience to take just one more step. He shared that during his famous fight against Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns, his corner told him he was losing the fight. In that critical moment, Sugar Ray dug deep into his hidden reservoir and found the strength to keep going. In the 14th round, he won the fight and retained his championship.
This morning, we’re going to explore a psalm that reveals the “hidden reservoir” of confidence in God when everything around us is crumbling. As we’ve seen families commit to serving the Lord, and as we prepare for baptisms today, we know the storms of life will come. The key will be remembering today’s commitments when those storms hit—just like we must remember how God has forgiven us, shown us mercy, and offered grace.
Storms in Life Create Doubt, Despair, and Depression- but the Hidden Reservoir Reminds Us to Faithfully Fight
David, too, faced intense storms in his life. He was betrayed by those he trusted, hunted like an animal, and forced to hide in caves. At one point, he was captured by the Philistines and had to feign madness to escape. Some believe the psalm we will examine today was written during one of the darkest times of David’s life—when his son Absalom tried to overthrow him, and his family was in turmoil.
Yet in the midst of all this, David exhibited a quiet resolve and unshakable trust in the Lord. The question we need to ask ourselves is this: When life’s storms come and everything feels like it’s crumbling, will we have the confidence to stand and wait for the Lord?
What does God’s Word teach us about the problem from His perspective?

“Kate went in for a routine shoulder surgery, but soon found herself back in the ER with complications. Doctors discovered a blood clot, administered medicine, and admitted her to the hospital. She felt uneasy, something wasn’t right, so she asked to stay one more night.
After being discharged, Kate woke up at home unable to speak or control her body—a severe reaction to the medicine. Back in the hospital, she spent another week and a half, missing her kids’ first day of school and dealing with warnings of stroke or embolism. She felt alone, scared, and completely out of control, asking God why He had forgotten her.
One day, Kate asked her husband to sneak in a Diet Coke to help with her headache. When he returned, he excitedly held up the bottle—‘ You won’t believe this!’ he said. Printed on the Coke bottle was her name: ‘Kate.’
During the marketing campaign, she had looked for her name on bottles everywhere but never found it—until that moment.
Right when she felt forgotten, God reminded her through something as simple as a soda bottle that He still saw her.
Kate kept that bottle in her kitchen as a reminder to never doubt God’s presence, even when she couldn’t see it.
Like Kate, we’ve all seen God show up when we needed Him most. This is the reward: knowing God never forgets us, even in the darkest moments of our lives.”
Big Takeaway
Are you holding on to control in a situation that’s beyond your power to change?
Where does your true encouragement come from—God’s promises or the approval of others?
In what part of your life do you sense God at work, or hear Him calling you to be patient and wait?
Let’s remember this: when life feels like it’s falling apart, God alone is our foundation. Like David, we may find ourselves in seasons of uncertainty, betrayal, or hardship. Yet, our confidence isn’t in our ability to control the situation or in the approval of others. It’s in God’s unshakable strength, His unwavering presence, and His promise to reward those who trust Him. So when life crumbles, lean into Hidden Reservoir of Faith in the One who never will. He is our rock, our refuge, and our salvation. Let’s rest in Him and have confidence, knowing that God is always enough, and being reminded of this is Reward Enough.
