God of Second Chances

(Jonah 2:3) You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea.The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves.

3 Types of Grace 

Saving Grace 

(Ephesians 2:8) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God 

Teaching Grace 

(Titus 2:11-12) For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age 

Enabling Grace 

(2 Corinthians 12:9) But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 

(Jonah 3:1) Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time 

1. We serve a God of

(Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT) The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.

2. A second chance is for a response

(Jonah 3:2) “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” 

(2 Corinthians 6:1) We are workers together with God, so we beg you: Do not let the grace that you received from God be for nothing. 

(Jonah 3:3) Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh.

3. The second chance is because

(Jonah 3:3-4) 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”

4. The second chance is so others can second chances

(Matthew 18:21-22) 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times 

(Jonah 3:5-6) 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. 6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 

(Jonah 3:10) When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.”
