Facing The Giants

(Acts 2:42) They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

(2 Samuel 21:15-17) 15 Once again the Philistines were at war with Israel. And when David and his men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted. 16 Ishbi-benob was a descendant of the giants; his bronze spearhead weighed more than seven pounds, and he was armed with a new sword. He had cornered David and was about to kill him 17 But Abishai came to David’s rescue and killed the Philistine. Then David’s men declared, “You are not going out to battle with us again! Why risk snuffing out the light of Israel?”

1. Recognize that you are in a

(Ephesians 6:12) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

(1 Peter 5:8) Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

(1 Corinthians 10:12-13) If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation

to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

When we are tempted God shows us a way out:
  • Wisdom from scripture
  • Empowerment of the Holy Spirit
  • Accountability from mentors, leaders, Pastors

2. Recognize when you are

(2 Samuel 21:15) Once again the Philistines were at war with Israel. And when David and his men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted.

(Genesis 2:2-3) By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

(Matthew 11:28) Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

(Proverbs 11:25) A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

3. Recognize your

(2 Samuel 21:15) But Abishai came to David’s rescue and killed the Philistine.

The reason for small groups is that we all have giants coming at us:
  • The giant of depression and anxiety wants to paralyze you from the calling that God has for your life
  • The giant of materialism and greed wants to distract you from what is really important
  • The giant of entertainment and busyness wants to keep us focused on things that won’t satisfy our souls

(John 5:6) When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

(John 5:8-9) 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

What is the Holy Spirit speaking to you today?
