Jesus Over Shame
(John 8:2-5) Early the next morning Jesus was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
(John 8:5-6) The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.
1. Jesus
(Hebrews 4:15) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
(Philippians 2:6-8 NLT) Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
(John 8:6-8 NLT) Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
(John 8:9-11) 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.
(Romans 3:23) For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
(John 8:10-12) Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. 12 Jesus said, “Neither do I.”
2. Jesus offers a
(Lamentations 3:21-23) 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Every morning God’s grace is available.
The entire Bible is full of people who needed another chance:
Jacob: Cheated his brother out of his inheritance
Moses: Murdered a man
Rahab: Was a prostitute (ends up being in the lineage of Jesus)
Samson: Wasted his talent & ends up in prison
Jonah: Runs from God and ends up in the belly of a whale David: commits adultery with Bathsheba and then has her husband killed
Peter: Denies Jesus publicly 3 times at his arrest
We serve a God of second chances!
3. Jesus offers
(John 8:11) “Go and sin no more.”
(John 10:10) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
This is the vision for Legacy Church:
Know God – Not know about God, not know the Bible verses to quote, but have an authentic relationship with God.
Find Freedom- Reconciling the pain of your past so you can enter into the future that God has for you. We believe we do this through small groups.
Small groups are the opportunity to get real with our issues, take off our mask, and find healing.
Discover Purpose: Everyone has gifts inside them that can be used for the glory of God.
Create a Legacy- Regardless of what your family Legacy has been in the past, God has a new Legacy for your future.
