Three Baptisms. One Message.

January 5, 2025   /   New Hope

  1. The Baptism of Repentance (Matthew 3:1-11)
  • Wilderness: desolation, discomfort. It was a place of less . Don’t despise it! Grow in it!
  • Repentance: Metanoeho: to change one’s mind. It’s a change that leads to a transformation of behavior.
  • Godly grief produces repentance that leads to salvation without regret, worldly grief produces death- 2Cor 7:10
  • John understood the found Christ. No temple. No Rope and Tassel. No teaching sacrificial offerings.
  • (Vs7) Why was John immediate critical to the Religious leaders of the day?
  • : They taught the law but failed to live it (Matthew 23:3).
  • : They added burdens & rules to God’s law, making it impossible for people to live faithfully. Matt23:4
  • : They sought recognition and status rather than serving others humbly (Matthew 23:5-7)
  • (Vs 8-9) Bear Fruit! He refused to let them use baptism as a public sign of support! He demanded !
  1. The Baptism of Fire (Matthew 3: 9-12) “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” vs11
  • Threshing Floor:
  • Place for separating the good (grain) from the bad (wheat)
  • Jesus’ judgment would be like separating wheat from chaff or true believers from false believers.
  • 1 Timothy 5:8 “He has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.”
  • Romans 1:32 “…who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
  1. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3: 11)
  • Do not be Discouraged. Here is the Good News. We are not under John’s Baptism!
  • This the only Baptism that matters! We are saved by faith and clothed with the righteousness of Christ.
  • (vs14) Why was John Reluctant to Baptist Jesus?
  • (vs15) Why are we condemned for not sins? Because Jesus fulfilled all righteousness.
  • Romans 5:19: “For by one man’s many were made sinners, so by one man’s many shall be made righteous.”
  • In Luke 4, Jesus is Reading Isaiah 61, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in you hearing”
  • 1 Peter 2:24 “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
  • 1 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”
