A. Set Apart Unto Truth v. 17

1. To sanctify is to set apart, to consecrate, to make
2. For the disciple, being made holy is a stage process

• •  We made holy by the blood of Christ
    • He 10:13 / Rv 1:5 / I Co 6:11
  •  We made holy by the work of the Holy Spirit
    • 2 Co 5:17 / Ga 5:16,22,23 / 2 Co 3:18
  •  We made holy in our glorification by God
    •  1 Th 5:23 / Ro 8:28-30 / I Jn 3:2

3. This request Jesus offers is a concern for the process

4. Jesus prays that the disciples would be made holy in

• • Only one sure source of pure truth:
  • Only one spirit of truth: the Jn 14:17 / 15:26 / 16:13
  •  One surprising reaction from the world: ! v 14

B. Committed to Mission v. 18

1. The mission of Jesus

  • Mission Jn 17:4

2. The mission of the disciples

• • Jesus in the way sends His disciples into the world
  • The disciples mission was to follow and Jesus
    • It is a mission Lk 9:23
    • It is an consuming mission Mk 12:30
    • It is a priority mission Mt 6:33
    • It is a mission to the glory of God I Pt 2:9 / 3:15
    • It is a mission to others to Jesus Mt 28:19-20 / Ac 1:8

C. Conformed to Christ v. 19

1. Jesus consecrated Himself for the of His disciples

• • In the past Jn 1:14 / Phil 2:5-8
  • At the present “I (continue to) sanctify Myself” v 19

2. He purposed that His disciples be consecrated as He is

• • The extent of this consecration is blowing vs 21a,23a
  • The testimony of this consecration is vs 21b,23b
  • The reality of this consecration is our with Christ
    • Jn 15:5 – abiding in vine
    • 2 Pt 1:4 – ‘partakers of divine nature”
