Love: our motivation – The greatest command is to love the Lord and love one another. Love conditions everything that we do. Our love needs to be evident and contagious.
Develop a love for the Lord that pursues Him wholeheartedly and is submitted to His Lordship.
Luke 5:15-16 BSB – But the news about Jesus spread all the more, and great crowds came to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray.
Luke 6:12 BSB – In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God.
Mark 1:35 BSB – Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray.
1. Developing your secret place is motivated by a longing heart.
Psalm 63:1-2 BSB – O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water. So I have seen You in the sanctuary and beheld Your power and glory.
Psalm 42:1-2 BSB – As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear in God’s presence?
Psalm 27:4 BSB – One thing I have asked of the Lord; this is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and seek Him in His temple.
Ezekiel 36:26 BSB – “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
2. God promises that He will come close to us when we come close to Him.
James 4:8 BSB – Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
3. You will need to shut the door.
Matthew 6:6 BSB – But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
4. You will be challenged to purge sin from your life.
2 Chronicles 7:14 BSB – and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
5. The Holy Spirit will help you.
Romans 8:26 BSB – In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.
Isaiah 11:2 BSB – The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.
