How Deep the Father’s Love
Kill Sin Before it Kills Us: Colossians 3:5-11
In Colossians 3:5-11, the Apostle Paul instructs Christians on how to live out their faith by “putting to death” and “put away” the sins in his or her life. Paul specifically instructs the believer to put to death sins of immorality and put away sins of the tongue because they have died in Christ and are now hidden in Christ. We are to put on the new self, which is being renewed in the knowledge of God who is our creator.
Remove sinful things in your life.
How?
- Put them to death (v5).
- Remove them like old clothing (vv.8-9).
Example of sinful things to be removed.
- Sins of immorality (v5b).
- Sins of the tongue (vv.8-9).
Reasons to remove these sins.
- God’s wrath is coming (v6).
- These things are part of your past (v7).
- God is making your new (vv.9-10).
- All man-made barriers are removed (v11).
Application:
How do we walk in a manner worthy of the Lord (1:6)?
- Humility leads to confessions/repentance (Isa 66:2; Prv 28:13; 1 Jn 1:8-9).
- Controlled by the Spirit (Col 3:16; Jn 14:16, 26; 16:8; 1 Cor 12:7; Prv 3:5-6).
- Understand your heart (Prv 4:23).
- Renew your mind (Rm 12:1-2).
