How to Think About This Upcoming Election

I. Introduction

A. As followers of Jesus, we want to think about , including this upcoming election, in a way!

II. The Greatest Elections in History

A. versus an earthly

1.

2. I Samuel 8:4-7 (NLT) 4Finally, all the elders of Israel met at Ramah to discuss the matter with Samuel. 5“Look,” they told him, “you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.” 6Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the LORD for guidance. 7“Do everything they say to you,” the LORD replied, “for it is me they are rejecting, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer.”

3. I Samuel 8:19-20a (NLT) 19But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. 20“We want to be like the nations around us.”

4. A lot of times, if we’re not willing to learn the way from God, He’ll let us learn the way.

5. Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT) 6For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity.

6. “The Kingdom of God is !”

7. John 18:33b (NLT) “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him.

8. John 18:36 (NLT) “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”

9. John 18:37 (NLT) Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”

B. versus

1. John 18:39b-40 (NLT) 39b“Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?” 40But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)

2. What marked Jesus as the bigger to the kingdoms of this world, is what marked Him as in the Kingdom of God!

3. Philippians 2:3-4, 8 (NAS) 3Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

4. Philippians 2:9-11 (NAS) 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
