Is God Judgmental?
I. Introduction
A. Genesis 1:27-28 (NAS) 27God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
B. Genesis 2:23 (NAS) The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
C. Genesis 2:16-17 (NAS) 16The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
D. Genesis 2:9a (NAS) Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food.
E. Genesis 1:28a (NAS) God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it.”
F. All of God’s commands are given—not because God is judgmental or —but because God wants to human life!
G. Genesis 3:1 (NAS) Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
1. If I’m going to disobey God, then I have to start God.
H. Genesis 3:2-3 (NAS) 2The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’”
I. This is a very concrete Hebrew way of expressing the idea that human beings want to decide what is right or wrong .
1. “I get to decide what’s right and wrong !”
J. The Bible teaches that there is a right and wrong that’s just the way life works!
1. There is a —and there is an . It’s built into the way life works!
K. Deuteronomy 22:10 (NAS) “You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.”
L. Deuteronomy 22:11 (NAS) “You shall not wear a material mixed of wool and linen together.”
M. “Sympathetic ”
1. Egalitarianism is the notion that every human being is of worth and dignity.
2. “The Doctrine of Somebodyness. You are somebody.” (The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)
3. In the Kingdom of God—everybody is “”! Everybody is equal!
4. Your “place” in this church is not based on the color of your skin or your gender! It’s based on your calling from and your giftedness!
N. Leviticus 24:19 (NAS) ‘If a man injures his neighbor, just as he has done, so it shall be done to him.’
1. In that world—if you were rich and powerful—you could get away with you wanted.
2. This was actually an enormous step in the direction of !
O. God wants you to be free so much—that when you had broken God’s law—when you owed God this debt that you could never repay— gave His to purchase your freedom!
