The Trinity

I. Introduction

A. What is the Trinity?

1. “Trinity” = of

2. Genesis 1:26a (NLT) Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us.

3. The Doctrine of the Trinity: There is who eternally exists as – Father, Son and Spirit. Each is and God.

B. Addressing the mystery

1. – three separate gods

2. – three parts of one God

3. – three different “modes” of God

4. – Jesus is not God.

II. What the Trinity Teaches Us

A. is .

1. Matthew 3:16-17 (NLT) 16After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

2. 1 John 4:8 (NLT) But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

3. Romans 1:20 (NLT) For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

B. God made us .

1. Matthew 22:36-39 (NLT) 36“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” 37Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

2. John 15:12-14 (NLT) 12“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command.”

C. God wants a with us.

1. Romans 8:1-4 (NLT) 1So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. 3The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
