Why Mary?

I. Introduction

A. Luke 1:26-27 (NLT) 26In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.

II. Characteristics of Mary

1. Luke 1:28-31 (NLT) 28Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30“Don’t be frightened, Mary,” the angel told her, “For God has decided to bless you! 31You will become pregnant and have a son, and you are to name him Jesus.”

1. Luke 1:34 (NLT) Mary asked the angel, “But how can I have a baby? I am a virgin.”

2. Luke 1:35 (NLT) The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby born to you will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.”

1. Luke 1:38 (NLT) Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to accept whatever he wants. May everything you have said come true.” And then the angel left.

1. Luke 2:39 (NLT) When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee.

1. Luke 2:48 (NLT) His parents didn’t know what to think. “Son!” his mother said to him. “Why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been frantic, searching for you everywhere.”

1. John 2:3 (NAS) When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

2. Luke 11:27-28 (NLT) 27As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out, “God bless your mother—the womb from which you came, and the breasts that nursed you!” 28He replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”

3. In God’s Kingdom, respect and esteem flow to those who themselves before God and carry out bidding!

1. This is a very church; just like is going to be!

J.

1. John 19:25 (NAS) Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

K.

1. John 19:30 (NAS) Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

L.

1. Acts 1:14 (NAS) These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

2. God’s on a person’s life.

3. There’s something special about a person who is in church and !

a. levels the playing field for everybody!
