Sermon Talks
- What caught your attention in this week’s message? Was there something you had never heard before or something you had a question about?
- Look at the three types of humility again. Do you ever find yourself serving under the perception of false humility or insecurity?
- In verse 12, Jesus said, “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” What did He mean by that?
- Isaiah 9:17 says, “For everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer.” 1 Peter 2:1 says, “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.” How do these verses make you feel? What is the challenge here? How do you go about following through with what Peter says?
- Is there a standard of hypocrisy that you have for others but not for yourself?
- Is there any hypocrisy in your life where you believe and say the right things, but your actions contradict those beliefs and words?
- Is there any hypocrisy in your life towards God?
- In what ways does Jesus’ criticism of those appearing righteous externally but are internally corrupt challenge us to cultivate inner righteousness?
- Pray and ask God to reveal in you any hypocrisy that might exist. Pray with David who says in Psalm 51:10-12, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
Pray about it: Meditate on God’s Word (Matthew 23) and this week’s message.
Adoration: What can I praise God for in light of what this teaches me?
Confession: What sin can I confess because of what this teaches me?
Thanksgiving: What can I thank God for in light of what he has done?
Supplication: What do I need to ask of God in order to grow in light of this?
