Matthew 12:1-14
Experiencing God’s rest
What keeps us from experiencing God’s rest?
- sin
- self
- soul
“Rest time is not waste time. It is economy to gather fresh strength… It is wisdom to take occasional furlough. In the long run, we shall do more by sometimes doing less.”
~ Charles Spurgeon
Sermon Talks
- What caught your attention in this week’s message? Was there something you had never heard before or something you had a question about?
- How did Jewish law view the Sabbath? What were some of the laws from the Mishnah?
- What was the major controversy about the Sabbath for the Pharisees? What does that say about their hearts?
- Read Matthew 11:28-30.
- What is Jesus literally saying here?
- Why is this so important for us?
- Are there examples in your life demonstrating the importance of these verses?
- What do we learn from this passage?
- Jesus did have compassion.
- Jesus cared more about what was right than appearances.
- Jesus did what was right regardless of the consequences. He knew that healing this man would stir up the anger of the leaders. He knew they would even try to kill him for it. He could have tried to find an alternative such as asking this man to come back the next day. He did not do that. He did not look for an easy way out. Jesus did what was right even when it brought personal danger to Himself.
- Is there unconfessed sin in your life that is preventing you from experiencing God’s Sabbath?
- Do you have a feeling of guilt in a particular area of your life?
- Do you struggle with the belief that God is who He says He is and will do what He says He will do?
Pray about it: Meditate on God’s Word (Matthew 12:1-14) and this week’s message.
Adoration: What can I praise God for in light of what this teaches me?
Confession: What sin can I confess because of what this teaches me?
Thanksgiving: What can I thank God for in light of what he has done?
Supplication: What do I need to ask of God in order to grow in light of this?
