The Beauty of Baptism

Baptism derives from the Greek for “to baptize”
(βαπτίζω, baptizō)

Which can refer to either the forgiveness of sins or mundane purification before eating meals (Luke 11:38). The related word “washing” or “baptizing” (βαπτισμός, baptismos) refers to the act of dipping or immersing an object in water as part of a purification ritual.

Mark 1:1-9

(1)The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, (2)just as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I am sending My messenger before You, Who will prepare Your way; (3)The voice of one calling out in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight!’ ” (4)John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (5)And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. (6)John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. (7)And he was preaching, saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to bend down and untie the straps of His sandals. (8)I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” (9)In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Matthew 3:13-15

(13)Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him. (14)But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?” (15)But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

Joshua 3:1-17

(1)Then Joshua got up early in the morning; and he and all the sons of Israel set out from Shittim and came to the Jordan, and they spent the night there before they crossed. (5)Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do miracles among you.”

(7)Now the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they will know that just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you. (8)So you shall command the priests who are carrying the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you come to the edge of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’ ”

(13)And it will come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, that is, the waters which are flowing down from above; and they will stand in one heap.” (14)So when the people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant before the people,

(15)and when those who were carrying the ark came up to the Jordan and the feet of the priests carrying the ark stepped down into the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks all the days of harvest), (16)then the waters which were flowing down from above stood and rose up in one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho.

(17)And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan.

This is the Hebrew word Qadash.

This is the Hebrew word Qadash. It translates to set apart or to sanctify. It means to be set apart as sacred for God to use.

Joshua 3:1-17

(13)Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him. (14)But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?” (15)But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. (16)After He was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and settling on Him, (17)and behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 4:1

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Romans 6:1-7

(1)What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? (2)Far from it! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? (3)Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? (4)Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life. (5)For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, (6)knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; (7)for the one who has died is freed from sin.

Romans 6:5-7 TPT

For since we are permanently grafted into him to experience a death like his, then we are permanently grafted into him to experience a resurrection like his and the new life that it imparts. Could it be any clearer that our former identity is now and forever deprived of its power? For we were co-crucified with him to dismantle the stronghold of sin within us, so that we would not continue to live one moment longer submitted to sin’s power. Obviously, a dead person is incapable of sinning.

John 3:1-11

(1)Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; (2)this man came to Jesus at night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” (3)Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (4)Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?” (5)Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (6)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. (7)Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ (8)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.” (9)Nicodemus responded and said to Him, “How can these things be?” (10)Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? (11)Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you people do not accept our testimony.

Galatians 3:26-28

(26)For you are all sons and daughters of God through faith in Christ Jesus. (27)For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. (28)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Acts 19:1-6
(1)Now it happened that while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. (2)He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “On the contrary, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.” (3)And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” (4)Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” (5)When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (6)And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.

Acts 2:1-4

(1)When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. (2)And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. (3)And tongues that looked like fire appeared to them, distributing themselves, and a tongue rested on each one of them. (4)And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.

Matthew 28:18-20

(18)“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. (19)Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, (20)teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
